Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Hawks came up short Friday night, falling 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 15-25, 16-25) to UNC Pembroke at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The loss drops Shorter to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Hawks struggled to keep pace with the Braves in the opening set, as the hosts jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to take the first set. After falling behind early in the second set, Shorter battled back and traded leads with the hosts. The Hawks closed the set on a commanding 8-3 run to even the match at 1-1 and carry momentum into the third set.
UNC Pembroke again came out strong to begin the third set, using an early run to build its advantage. Shorter continued to battle, but could not overcome the deficit as the Braves reclaimed the lead and took a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set. Both teams battled early in the fourth set, but another big run from the Braves put the match out of reach for the Hawks as UNC Pembroke secured the 3-1 victory.
Caroline Sivills paced the Shorter offense with 13 kills and 17.5 points, while Caitlyn Sutton led the Hawks defensively with 15 digs.

Shorter will have a quick turnaround as the Hawks travel to Francis Marion tomorrow. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
