ROME, Ga.- The Shorter Hawks Softball team earned their first conference series win this season Saturday afternoon, walking off Belmont Abbey in game one 2-1, before earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory in game two.
GAME ONE
The opening game of the day proved to be a pitcher's duel, with both teams remaining scoreless. The Hawks showed signs of life in the bottom of the third by loading the bases, but could not convert due to pop-ups. The matchup went scoreless for three full innings until the Crusaders homered on the opening pitch of the fourth inning.
Rylee Gattis was able to stop the bleeding quickly and get three straight outs to make the score 1-0.
Bats for both sides went quiet again until the bottom of the sixth, when
Alex Hollingsworth got Shorter going and doubled one to right. Gattis followed suit with a double of her own to bring Hollingworth home and even it at one all. Both teams held each other at bay in the seventh, forcing extras. The Hawks held off Belmont Abbey in the top of the eighth before Alex Hollingworth answered the call with a walk-off triple to deliver Shorter the electric 2-1 win to open the day.
Notable Performances
Alex Hollingsworth: 3-4, RBI, R
Rylee Gattis: W (3-5), 8.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 1-3, RBI
GAME TWO
In the second game of the afternoon, the story was much the same. Both pitchers kept their hit rate low, and the fielding from both teams shut down everything. Shorter found home in the third frame thanks to another RBI gained by
Rylee Gattis that was followed by a three-up-three-down rally. The top of the fourth showed hope for Belmont Abbey, but third baseman
Kiley Arnold made a diving catch to end the inning early for the Crusaders.
Strong pitching from both teams kept the next innings scoreless, with no side seeming to gain an upper hand. The Crusaders had one last opportunity in the seventh, but would be denied by
Hayden Joyner, who had an immaculate day in the circle.
Notable Performances
Hayden Joyner: W (5-3), 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 K
Kiley Arnold: 2-3
Ashton Steven: 1-3, R
Rylee Gattis: 1-2, 1 RBI
