Hawks Fall on Day Two of Sam Baldwin Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- The Shorter Softball team fell to Kentucky Wesleyan in both games of their doubleheader at the Sam Baldwin Invitational, in a 6-5 defeat in both games one and two. 


GAME ONE

The opening inning was a high-powered one as Kentucky Wesleyan fired off four runs to take the early lead. Rylee Gattis returned the favor, getting Shorter on the board with an RBI single. Zariah Webb drove in a runner on a fielder's choice as Esperanza Reyes followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3 after one.

After a tight pitcher's dual in the next five innings, Anna Sanders broke the silence with an RBI double to tie it up at four. Madi Curtis would give Shorter the lead with an RBI single to put the Hawks in front 5-4. The Panthers, unfortunately, delivered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. The Hawks had one more chance but could not get anyone on bag, as they fell in game one 6-5.

GAME TWO

Brayleigh Leone got Shorter on the board first with an RBI single that drove in two to give the Hawks the early advantage. The Panthers responded in the following frame, scoring three runs of their own. 

The Panthers would add on another run in the third on a sac fly to take the 3-2 lead. After a quiet next four innings, Trinity Camp recorded her first hit as a Hawk in a major way, with a three-run double to put Shorter ahead 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks unfortunately fell victim to a walk-off three-run homer from Kentucky Wesleyan as they fell in a 6-5 final.

UP NEXT

Shorter will look to bounce back this Wednesday as they host Carson-Newman for a doubleheader series.
