Hawks Fall to Carson-Newman in Doubleheader

ROME- The Shorter Softball team (3-10) fell in both games of their doubleheader series to Carson-Newman (9-1) Wednesday afternoon at Alto Park.

The Hawks went the distance in game one, but would fall short in a 13-12 final before being defeated in game two in a 13-0 final.

GAME ONE

The Hawks struck first in the opening frame as Alex Hollingsworth connected on an RBI single to drive in Anna Sanders. The Eagles responded with a three-run inning in the top of the second before Katie Williams recorded the first home run of the 2026 campaign with a solo bomb to right field to cut the deficit for Shorter. The visitors continued to pour in runs with a two-run RBI double in the third. Madi Curtis connected on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-3 affair.

Both teams traded a run in the fifth to make it 7-4 heading into the final two innings. Both teams were held at bay in the sixth before Shorter's offense exploded in the seventh. Alex Hollingsworth drove in a run with a double before Rylee Gattis evened the score with an RBI double to force extras. The Eagles would, in turn, score five runs in the top of the eighth to take the 13-7 lead, capped off by a grand slam to swing the momentum their way. Shorter did not back down, scoring four runs in the inning to make it 13-12. Shorter unfortunately came up short after a pop-up left two runners on the bags to make it a 13-12 final.
