ROME, Ga.- The Shorter volleyball team put together a solid 3-1 victory against the Lees-McRae Bobcats Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks and Bobcats engaged in a tight first set as both sides traded points. Lees-McRae pulled ahead with a 19-15 lead, before being met by an 8-0 run from the Hawks to help them retain the lead and give them momentum to finish out the set 25-23.
The Bobcats gained early momentum in the second set after a pair of service aces gave them an 11-7 lead. Shorter stormed back, scoring seven unanswered to reclaim the lead and would engage in another tight battle that they would take 25-22.
Lees-McRae took control early in the third set and did not slow down despite the Hawks' comeback effort. The Bobcats forced a fourth set after taking the third 25-19.
Shorter and Lees-McRae once again traded points early on. The Hawks managed to pull away at the halfway mark and grab the 25-18 victory in the final set.
Victoria Sparks recorded a double-double for the Hawks at 13 kills and 15 points as
Caroline Sivills added in nine kills.
Helena Kelley and
Brooke Thao for the eighth straight game recorded double-digit assists as Kelley led the pair with 15 and Thao contributing 12 herself.
Helena Kelley added in 12 digs to give herself a double-double with digs and assists, as
Claudia Loyola followed closely with nine.
