CENTRAL, S.C.- The Shorter volleyball team earned their first conference victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Southern Wesleyan Tuesday night. The win improves the Hawks to 2-4 on the season.
The first set proved to be a back and forth exchange from both sides. The Hawks jumped ahead 16-11 after a
Victoria Sparks but would be met by a thrilling rally from Southern Wesleyan. Shorter battled hard but would drop the first set 27-25.
After another close start, the Hawks offense found some fire in the second set. Shorter went on a 12-3 run at the halfway mark to take the set 25-15. The third set proved to be a thrilling one, as no side seemed to gain an advantage. The Hawks managed to squeeze ahead late and would survive a rally from the Warriors as they took the third set 25-23.
Shorter took care of the Warriors in the fourth set as they established a lead early on and did not look back as they claimed the final set in a 25-17 win.
Victoria Sparks once again led the Hawks as she posted a double-double of 21 kills and 11 digs while also totaling 22.5 points.
Ava Medina and
Caroline Sivills cracked double digits in kills as Medina finished with 11 and Sivills with 10.
Brooke Thao and
Helena Kelley continue to dominate in the assist department as Thao dished out 26 and Kelley contributed with 21 to lead the way.
Claudia Loyola led the Hawks defensively with 13 digs as
Brooke Thao contributed with ten on the night.
UP NEXT
The Hawks will return to the Winthrop-King Centre Friday night where they will host Emmanuel in their conference home opener. First serve will take place at 5:00 PM.
