Shorter’s Historic Season Ends in the Quarterfinals

Spartanburg, SC —

Shorter's most successful women's basketball season since becoming an NCAA Division school ended late Friday afternoon when it lost 57-55 to Chowan university in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament.

The Hawks got off to a late start, allowing Chowan to gain a 13-4 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Shorter opened the 2nd quarter on a 10-point run started by Senior Derrica McCall with back-to-back buckets and Tiara Lewis with a bucket and 2-2 from the free throw line. They ended the 2nd quarter with a 12-2 run. But Chowan managed to hang on to a two-point lead going into the half.

In the 3rd quarter Shorter exploited Chowan's defense by going on another 10 point- run with a 3 pointer from Junior center Amya Patterson and back-to-back layups from Emariah Grant. Shorter had an advantage of 42-39. With four minutes remaining the Hawks were unable to put the game away, resulting in a 57-52 loss.

Grant led all scorers with 17 points, Senior Forward Lewis captured her 11th double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds, McCall tailed in 14 points.

Head Coach LaSheena Brooks stated, "I am very pleased with how we responded to being down. We did not quit we battled for 30 minutes to give ourselves a chance in this game. The outcome is not what we hoped it to be, but I am so proud of everyone that is part of this team. We made a lot of history this season: 21 wins, a divisional championship and making a conference tournament all for the first time in over 10 years. We will miss our seniors; they have been phenomenal leaders and laid the foundation for what this season produced."
