Bibbs' 40 Points Not Enough As Hawks Fall to Middle Georgia in Overtime

Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.- The Shorter Men's Basketball team went the distance against Middle Georgia State Saturday afternoon, falling in a heartbreaking 93-91 overtime loss inside of the Harp Recreation Center. 

The Hawks fell behind early, as the Knights took a 17-8 lead in the early goings of the first half. Shorter battled back, led by Chris Bibbs who poured in 16 of his 40 points in the first half. The Hawks continued to fight and would retain the lead at the 4:51 mark as an Axel Holmquist bucket put them ahead 30-29. Both teams traded the lead as the first half neared its end, with Shorter grabbing the 39-38 lead at halftime. 

The second half began with several lead changes as neither team managed to jump out in front. The Knights pushed ahead 53-47, only to be met by an 8-0 run from the Hawks. Both teams continued to trade baskets late, with the Hawks managing to pull away late with a Chris Bibbs three to make it 73-68. Bibbs continued to dominate offensively, securing a layup with just 1:10 remaining to put Shorter in front 77-72. The Knights stormed back, evening it up on three free throws with just seconds remaining. Shorter's defense held strong as the Knights failed to convert, forcing overtime. 

Donovan Shangase got the Hawks rolling with a three early to put Shorter in front 82-80. The Hawks managed to gain control as Chris Bibbs continued to pour it in for the Hawks. Middle Georgia continued to fight back, not allowing Shorter to put the game away. The Knights converted on a pair of free throws to take a 91-89 lead with 35 seconds left. David Compere stepped up for the Hawks late, drawing a foul and knocking down his free throws with 10 seconds remaining to even it up at 91 all. Middle Georgia ended up drawing a foul with 1.1 seconds remaining, knocking down both free throws to put the game away in a heartbreaking 93-91 defeat. 

The Hawks shot 45.9% from the field, going a solid 39.1% from behind the arc, and a respectable 76.5% from the charity stripe. Chris Bibbs was unconscious for the Hawks, leading all scorers with 40 points, going 13-of-16 from the field, as well as five-of-six from three, and grabbing ten rebounds. Donovan Shangase had a solid performance with 21 points, four rebounds, and six assists. Ja'Myas Davis rounded out the Hawks with 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
