Hawks Stage Thrilling Reverse Sweep to Defeat UMO

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — In a gripping Conference Carolinas matchup, the Shorter Hawks volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to secure a dramatic five-set victory over the University of Mount Olive. The showdown at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, North Carolina, ended with set scores of 19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22, and 17-15, propelling the Hawks to a .500 overall record (6-6) and a 1-0 start in conference play.

Mount Olive came out firing, leveraging a dynamic offensive attack to claim the first two sets with precision passing and aggressive swings at the net. The Hawks struggled to find their rhythm early, facing strong blocking and an effective serving strategy from the Trojans.

However, Shorter displayed exceptional grit and resilience as they regrouped heading into the third set. Tactical adjustments and a heightened defensive effort shifted the momentum in favor of the Hawks. Outside hitter Taylor-Reese Howell led the offensive charge with a team-high 15 kills, showcasing her ability to find seams in the defense. Emily Crocker and Caroline Sivills made significant contributions with 9 kills apiece, bolstering Shorter's front-row presence.

Setter Lauren Cantrell orchestrated the offense with poise, dishing out 42 assists while maintaining a steady tempo throughout the match. Libero Mallory Morgan anchored the back row with critical digs in pivotal moments, helping to neutralize Mount Olive's potent attackers.

The decisive fifth set was a nail-biter, with both teams trading points in a tightly contested frame. Shorter's composure under pressure proved decisive, as clutch swings and relentless defensive coverage sealed the comeback victory at 17-15.

This hard-fought win serves as a testament to the Hawks' determination and adaptability. With this confidence-boosting triumph, Shorter aims to build momentum as they navigate the challenges of Conference Carolinas play.
