Shorter Hawks Make History with 55-0 Shutout on Homecoming

ROME, Ga.— "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself." – Henry Ford

On a day that celebrated the past, present, and future of Shorter University, the Hawks delivered a historic performance, defeating Virginia-Lynchburg 55-0 in their first defensive shutout in 16 years. This decisive win not only improved the Hawks' record to 3-4 but set new program records for both the largest margin of victory and the most passing touchdowns in a single game, with six through the air—an unprecedented feat in Shorter football history. With alumni, recruits, and fans filling Barron Stadium, the Hawks' victory was a powerful reminder of Shorter's mission: Advancing God's Kingdom through academic excellence, spiritual growth, Christian leadership, and global service within the context of a biblical worldview.

Offensive Brilliance and a Record-Breaking Day

The Hawks' offense was unstoppable, scoring in all four quarters and breaking a school record with six passing touchdowns. Quarterback Joshua Brown led the charge, completing 12 of 20 passes for 186 yards and four touchdowns, setting the tone with connections to Cardrece Mobley for two scores, a 36-yard bomb to Jaylin Marshall, and a 31-yard strike to Cobie Bates.

Backup quarterback Jeb Walls seamlessly stepped in to add to the record-breaking performance. Wyatt Walters also connected on a fake FG pass to M. Schiefer Jr. for a 12-yard touchdown, while Walls capped off the final drive with an 8-yard scoring pass to TJ Holmes. This historic offensive display marked the first time in program history that Shorter recorded six passing touchdowns in a single game.

Key Offensive Stats:

This was the Hawks' first shutout in 16 years, led by Christian Benson, who posted 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, wreaking havoc in the backfield. Hugh Barbee III added an interception in the second half, while the defensive line, powered by Jahseim Henry, Tony Bethea, Trey Kruse and Cody Earle, recorded 6 sacks and held Virginia-Lynchburg to just 16 rushing yards.

Special Teams Brilliance

Tyler Simpson continued his standout season, nailing two 52-yard field goals and sending five of his kickoffs for touchbacks, ensuring Shorter controlled the field throughout the game. Wyatt Walters and the punt coverage unit limited return opportunities, helping the Hawks maintain their defensive dominance.

A Homecoming to Remember
Homecoming was about more than just a win; it was a celebration of Shorter's legacy and future. Alumni gathered to support the team and share their experiences, while the presence of recruits signaled the growth and promise of Shorter football. It was a day to honor the journey, mark records, and inspire the next generation of Hawks.

Coach Morrison's Reflection
Head Coach Zach Morrison expressed his pride after the game: "This is an incredible moment for Shorter Football. Seeing these guys break records, shut out an opponent, and play with passion and resilience is a testament to what we're building, brick by brick. I'm proud of how they represented Shorter University and our mission to honor God on and off the field."

Looking Ahead to #15 West Alabama
With a record-setting win behind them, the Hawks now turn their attention to #15-ranked West Alabama. As Coach Morrison put it, "We're building something special, and we're ready for the challenges ahead." With a 3-4 record, the Hawks look to carry this momentum into their next game against one of the top teams in Division II.
With confidence and unity, the Hawks are prepared for another test at Barron Stadium, eager to keep adding bricks to a season filled with growth and promise. #BrickByBrick
