OXFORD, Ala. – The eighth-seeded Shorter Hawks (28-21) defeated the No. 5 seed Lee University Flames (30-22) 11-1 in seven innings on Monday afternoon at Choccolocco Park to advance in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) tournament. Today's game was Lee's first loss in the tournament.
The Hawks struck first today in the top of the second after
Norman Leon scored on a wild pitch. Shortly after this,
Lyndon Weaver doubled to right to score
Jacob Pajer,
Kody Krause and
Jakob Woods. Later on,
Cameron Tilly doubled to left to score Weaver.
Shorter added on three additional runs in the top of the third. Krause walked with the bases loaded, and this scored
Logan Stockton. Pajer then singled to left to score Woods and Leon. This made the score 8-0 Shorter.
The Flames plated their run in the bottom of the third after Joshua Perez hit a solo home run to right.
Krause reached first on a fielder's choice in the top of the fourth, and this scored Stockton to plate the next run for the Hawks. Later in the inning, Pajer doubled down the left field line to score Krause and
Matt Christian.
Pajer went 2-for-4 with a run scored, four RBI and a walk in this afternoon's game. Leon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
Caleb McGinnis started for the Hawks this afternoon. He tossed two innings, striking out three and giving up one run on three hits.
Kenny Jinks (W, 2-2) tossed four innings in relief, striking out three and giving up three hits and one walk.
Andrew Asselin pitched the final inning for Shorter, striking out two and giving up one walk.

The Hawks will face the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers at 11 a.m. CT (12 p.m. ET) for a play-in game to decide who goes to the GSC championship game. Since today was Lee's first loss in the double-elimination tournament, they automatically advance to the championship game.
