MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Shorter Hawks swept the Christian Brothers University (CBU) Buccaneers in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at CBU. The offense exploded for the Hawks in game one as Shorter defeated the Buccaneers 19-8. The pitching was solid in the nightcap, and the Hawks defeated CBU 3-1.
The Hawks improve to 20-15 on the season and 11-11 in Gulf South Conference (GSC) play after today. CBU is now 10-24 on the season and 6-14 in GSC play.
Game 1, Shorter wins 19-8
The Hawks defeated the Buccaneers 19-8 in game one behind strong bats. Since Shorter was ahead by enough after seven innings, the Hawks run ruled CBU in game one.
CBU struck first in the home half of the first of game one and plated three runs.
Shorter responded to this quickly and scored six runs in the top of the second.
Kobe Jones singled to left center to score
Cory Mason to plate the first run of the inning. Shortly after this,
Isaac Harkins had a sac fly to right that scored
Logan Stockton.
Right after the sac fly,
Jacob Pajer hit a three-run home run to right center. To plate the final run of the inning,
Lyndon Weaver singled through the ride side, and this scored
Donavan Frayer.
The Buccaneers plated four runs in the bottom of the second. This made the score 7-6 CBU.
The score remained 7-6 CBU until the top of the fourth when Harkins hit a solo home run to tie the game.
The top of the fifth was a solid inning offensively for the Hawks as they added on 10 runs. Four of these runs came from a
Matt Christian grand slam.
However, before the grand slam, Stockton doubled to left center to score Mason and Weaver. Shortly after the grand slam, Frayer singled up the middle to score Pajer. Later on, Mason and Stockton hit back-to-back home runs to plate the final three runs of the inning for the Hawks.
Shorter plated its final two runs of game one in the top of the seventh. Stockton had a sac fly to right that scored Frayer for the inning's first run. Later in the inning,
Norman Leon doubled to score Mason.
CBU plated its final run of game one in the bottom of the seventh.
Stockton went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI in game one. Frayer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Leon went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mason went 2-for-3 with four runs scored, two RBI and two walks.
Carson Cook (W, 4-3) tossed five innings in relief in game one and was solid. He gave up one run on six hits and one walk and had two strikeouts.
Game 2, Shorter wins 3-1
Shorter defeated CBU 3-1 in the nightcap behind a dominant pitching performance from
Jonathan Pintaro (W, 7-3).
Pintaro set the GSC conference career record for strikeouts after his performance in game two. He had 17 strikeouts and gave up one run on four hits and two walks.
Shorter struck first in game two in the top of the third.
Donavan Frayer had a sac fly to center that scored
Matt Christian.
The Hawks plated their next run in the top of the fifth after
Jacob Pajer had a sac fly to right that scored Christian.
The Buccaneers plated their only run of game two in the home half of the fifth.
Christian singled to right center to score
Kobe Jones in the top of the seventh to plate the final run of game two for the Hawks.
Christian went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in game two.
