Softball goes 1-2 in Gulf Shores Invitational Play

GULF SHORES, Ala.- The Lady Hawks traveled to Gulf Shores for a three-day tournament. All games were canceled on Friday due to bad weather. Shorter played Rollins College and Drury University on Saturday and lost 0-9 and 1-4 respectively. Spring Hill was the final opponent of the tournament for the Lady Hawks who emerged victorious, winning 4-2.

Game 1
Rollins College scored all of their runs in three innings, including a six-run third inning. Hannah Morales, Kaylee George, and Alexis Sewell all recorded one hit in this game. Hannah Morales and Angela Cecere drew one walk each. Emily Brunson pitched 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Courtney Pinkston pitched 2.2 innings in relief and recorded one strikeout. Shorter had the best chance to score in the bottom of the fifth inning after Alexis Sewell and Hannah Morales singled through the right side but were left on base.

Game 2
Drury College got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning and jumped out to a three to nothing lead. The Hawks fought back in the top of the third inning when Paytn Cripps doubled to center field and then scored off Payton Tuder's single to right center. However, Drury extended their lead in the bottom of the third to a four to one lead. Hannah Morales led the team with two hits. Payton Tuder also recorded a hit, an RBI and drew a walk.

Game 3
Shorter got out to an early lead in the first inning after Hannah Morales walked, then stole second, advanced to third and scored on ground outs by Alexis Sewell and Kaylee Combs. Spring Hill tied it up in the fourth inning off a single through the left side, and then took a one-run lead in the sixth inning off a triple. The Lady Hawks bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning. It all started with Kaylee George reaching on an error, then Kylie League singled up the middle. Taylor Phillips popped out to center field and the runners advanced on an error by the center fielder. Payton Tuder singled which scored Kaylee George and pinch runner Angela Cecere. Paytn Cripps singled which scored Payton Tuder and the Lady Hawks took a 4-2 lead. Spring Hill was unable to rally and left three runners on base to end the game.

The Lady Hawks will travel to Albertville, Alabama to play in the Charger Chill Out Tournament next weekend. The first game is against Spring Hill on February 11th at 5 PM.
