SPARTANBURG, Sc.- The Lady Hawks traveled to South Carolina today for a matchup with the Valkyries of Converse University. Shorter outscored Converse in the first, third, and fourth quarters to give Coach
Laura Jordan her first collegiate win as the Lady Hawks defeated the Valkyries 16-8.
The Valkyries struck first 1:12 minutes into the game on a goal by Libby Stevens.
Sydney Jones scored two minutes later with an assist from
Olivia Masters to tie the game at one, and then Sydney scored again with 9 minutes left in the first quarter.
Olivia Masters and
Jenny Hernandez got in on the scoring for the Lady Hawks to extend their lead to 4-1. Haleigh McSwain scored the next goal for the Valkyries with 4 minutes left in the first quarter.
Olivia Contento scored her first goal of the game with an assist from
Alexis Mount to bring Shorter's lead back to three goals. Rhianna Warner scored in the final ten seconds of the first quarter to make the game 5-3.
Alexis Mount started the scoring for the Lady Hawks in the second quarter extending the Lady Hawks lead to three goals. The Valkyries fought back with two goals of their own to make it a one goal game.
Olivia Contento scored her second goal of the game with four minutes left in the second quarter and the Lady Hawks went into the locker room with a 7-5 lead. Converse scored the first goal of the second half to bring the game back to a one goal difference. Then Shorter went on a scoring run, scoring the next four goals.
Olivia Contento scored her third and fourth goal of the game,
Cat Bloedow scored her first goal of the game, and
Maria Hansen scored her first goal. Cassidy O'Neill scored the next two goals for the Valkyries which makes it an 11-8 game with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Maria Hansen scored the next three goals for the Lady Hawks.
Olivia Masters and
Olivia Contento scored the final two goals of the game in the last four minutes of the game as the Lady Hawks double up the Valkyries.
Olivia Contento led the Lady Hawks with five goals, followed by
Maria Hansen with four.
Olivia Masters scored two goals and recorded three assists.
Maria Hansen led Shorter with seven shots on goal followed by
Olivia Masters who had six shots on goal. Goalkeeper,
Makala McKinney played 60 minutes and recorded eight saves and her first win of the season.
The Lady Hawks will be back at home for a matchup with UVA Wise on Sunday February 27
th at 1 PM.
