Lady Hawks start GSC play 1-1 with a Walkoff Grandslam from Tuder

ROME, Ga.—The Shorter Softball team started out conference play with a walkoff grand slam from Peyton Tuder to take game one against Delta State, 10-9. The Hawks unable to get the bats going in the second game fell, 14-6.
 
The Lady Hawks improve to 3-7 overall and 1-1 GSC while Delta State has a record of 5-6 and 1-1 GSC.

Game 1
Shorter started out with the first to score in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice ground out to score Kaylee George. In the bottom of third, Taylor Phillips grounded out to score Kaylee Combs, 3-0. In the top of the fourth, Delta State got the bats going with a homerun from Jenny Griggers to start off the inning followed by a triple from MyCala Helms to score Chrissy Tubbs. Then Taylor Picou hit a single to score Helms and tie the game 3-3. In the top of the sixth, Delta State's Katelyn Hayman doubled to right center to score two to take the lead, 5-3.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Hawks answered back with their bats from a two rbi single from Carlee Graham to tie the game up, 5-5. Then Phillips doubled to right center to score Izzy Kinard and take the lead back, 6-5.
In the top of the seventh, the Lady Statesmen fought back to score three runs and take the lead 9-6. Shorter knew they needed to get a rally going and started the inning off with Paytn Cripps walking, followed by a single from Angela Cecere. Then Hannah Morales singled to center field. Payton Tuder stepped up to the plate and smacked the ball out of the park for a walk off grand slam to give the Hawks the win, 10-9.
Courtney Pinkston got her first win in the circle for the season.
Combs led the Lady Hawks with her bat by going 3-4 with a double. Then Carlee Graham with 2-2 with two walks.

Game 2
The Lady Statesmen came out ready to go in game two by scoring a total of eight runs in the first three innings.
The Lady Hawks scored one run in the bottom of third, 8-1. In the fourth, Delta State tallied across one run, 9-1. Shorter brought the sticks out and scored five runs. Combs started out the inning getting on first base from an error caused by the pitcher. Then Kennedi Smith pinch ran for Combs to then score off of a single from Phillips. Followed by a double from Cripps to score Kaylee George, 9-3. Angela Cecere scored on a wild pitch, 9-6. In the top of the sixth, the Lady Statesmen cranked out two homeruns and a double to score a total of five runs and end the game, 14-6.
Cripps went 2-3 with one RBI and two doubles. While Cecere went 1-3 with a double.
 
Shorter will be back in action at Alto Park on Sunday, February 20th for the final game of the Delta State series with first pitch slated for 1p.m..
