As the story of the 2022 season continues to be written the Shorter Hawks have shown they will not give up against any opponent. Coach Morrison stated, "West Florida does a great job and have been able to bring in some exceptional talent with D-1 transfers and junior college players, but I am proud of the fight of the Hawks today. We know there are areas in which we will work to improve such as our special teams' units." The Hawks defense only allowed 10 points in the first half with the other score coming on a punt return for a touchdown early in the 1
st quarter. "I was proud of the defense in the first half, West Florida's offense is top 10 in the country, and we were able to slow them down. The hardest part for the defense was they were given bad field position for most of the game."
Later on the Argonauts went 80 yards down the field in nine plays. This drive was capped off with a 12-yard rushing touchdown which brought the score to 14-0.
Shorter established a fantastic drive on a 15-play drive that finished with a 24-yard field goal by
Nicholas Pope. "In that situation we need to be able to punch it in for the TD, but I was excited to see the FG unit back on the right page this week," stated Morrison. Shorter's defense held up strong and only gave up a field goal very late in the second. Before the end of the half the score stands 17-3. "Coach Jacobs had a great game plan for the defense, and we were able to execute that plan in the first half," said Morrison
As the homecoming festivities were held at halftime the coaches worked to prep the team for the second half. Shorter had a solid kickoff by
Brett Bardenwerper who ended up making the tackle on the play. The third quarter started off with another field goal by the Argonauts. With four minutes left in the quarter a 13- yard passing touchdown was made by the Argonauts. Shortly after,
Aeneas Dennis responded by threading a ten-yard pass in traffic for a spectacular touchdown catch and reach into the end zone by
Trevon Dirden.
Aeneas Dennis finished the game with 18 completions out of 31 attempts for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
Nicholas Pope nailed the extra point kick.
There was an arguable 12-yard safety for Shorter early in the fourth quarter making the score 29-10. Receiving the ball in good field position with ten minutes to go in the fourth, UWF ran in a 10-yard touchdown. Two minutes later after driving the ball 75 yards in just 8 plays
Kyle Morlock caught a 11-yard passing touchdown from
Aeneas Dennis. Morlock ended the game with three receptions for 37 yards.
UWF scored two more rushing touchdowns. Then
Harold Cook threw a short pass across the field to
Devin Brown who returned it 69 yards to the house with his blazing speed.
Devin Brown ended the game with four receptions and 136 receiving yards.
Dorian Anderson also had 4 receptions for 64 yards and some high and tough ball grabs. "I was excited to see the offense still working each drive to score,
Devin Brown sparked a few drives and was a key player for us this week, I am excited to see how he continues to progress throughout the rest of the season," said Morrison.
Dorian Anderson continues to add to his record breaking year receiving. Morrison said of DD, "Dorian has made some excellent plays throughout the year, but he has stepped up his leadership of the team as well. He was cut loose a few times but we were unable to get the ball to him on those individual plays. I am looking forward to DD finishing the season strong."
Artellious Edmonds stood out with 6 solo tackles. "Telly (Artellious) has stepped up and as a freshman I am excited to see him grow over the next couple years. Kolbey Reynolds who finished last week with the 3
rd highest tackle total in Shorter football history finished the day with 3 solo tackles and three assists. Bruce Guyton,
Cedric Lynch, Terrence Vandiver, had three solo tackles and 1 assist.
The Hawks will have a short week as they play #7 ranked Delta State on Thursday October 20
th at 7:00 PM at Historic Barron Stadium.
