West Georgia sweeps Lady Hawks

ROME, Ga. – The Lady Hawks dropped the final two games of their weekend series against the University of West Georgia in a doubleheader at Alto Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Hawks lost the first game of the doubleheader 7-0 in seven innings to a formidable Lady Wolves squad. West Georgia took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, via a 2-run homer by Alley Taylor. Then, West Georgia's Madison Slappey's 2-run home run in the sixth inning to virtually ice the game.

Slappey led the Lady Wolves in batting, as she went 2-3 from the plate and added two runs, two RBIs and the aforementioned home run. Taylor finished second on the visitors in batting, as she went 2-4 with three RBIs and the previously mentioned home run and scored a run of her own.

West Georgia starting pitcher Morgan Goree had an impressive day on the mound, as she threw 11 strikeouts and only gave up five hits in the shutout. Shorter's Sydney Poston accounted for two of those hits, as she led the Lady Hawks (4-10, 0-6) in batting in her four plate appearances.

In the final game of the series, the Lady Wolves ran away with it by the score of 15-3. The game was not as bad as the final score indicated for the majority of the game. In fact, the game was tied 2-2 after the third inning. However, West Georgia (9-3, 7-2) added 11 unanswered runs from there to put the game out of reach.

Shorter's Hannah Morales led the Lady Hawks from the plate, as she went 2-4. Teammates Alexis Sewell and Carlee Graham both went 1-3 batting. Graham scored a run and accounted for two RBIs, and Sewell added an RBI as well.

West Georgia's Hannah Scarbrough led her team in batting, going 2-3 with two RBIs and scored a run. Teammate Cassie Henderson also went 2-3 and added an RBI and two runs. Lexi Close and Chandler Mevis both homered for the visitors as well.

The Shorter Lady Hawks will be back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m., as they will play their first game of a three-game series at the University of West Alabama that weekend
