Hawks take series against Choctaws

CLINTON, MS - The Shorter Hawks continued their road series against Mississippi on Saturday with a doubleheader. The Hawks split the doubleheader taking the series win from the Choctaws. In a dominant first game of the series, Shorter came back to win 5-2 in the second game, the Hawks dropped the third game, with the Choctaws offensive explosion, getting their first win of the series 13-3.

Shorter improved to 14-7 overall and 11-7 in GSC play on the weekend. Mississippi College improved to 5-13 overall and 2-11 in GSC play on the weekend.

Game 1:

The Hawks went behind senior arm Taylor Boisclair, who picked up his third win of the season.

The Choctaws wasted no time opening up the game, as George Fraid hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the first. The Hawks' offense was held at bay until the top of the fifth when Jakob Woods hit a solo home run to tie the game. The Hawks continued to show off their power as Cory Mason, Matt Christian, and Justin Barnes all go yard in the top of the seventh. Nathaniel Butterworth helped the Hawks cause with an RBI single in the top of the eighth. The Choctaws scraped across the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth from an RBI single from Ken Scott. Boisclair picked up his third win of the season, pitching a strong seven innings and striking out nine. With Kevin Ludden coming in to shut the door for the Hawks, earning his fifth save of the season.

Game 2: 
The Choctaws wasted no time seeking their first win of the series; Dylan Duplechain opened with an RBI double. Fraid scored Duplechain while grounding out too short. The Hawks answered in the third, with Woods reaching on a throwing error, scoring Don Frayer. The Choctaws broke the game open in the bottom of the third, Scott drove in a run on an RBI single, Caleb Reese had two RBIs on a single, followed up by a three-run home run from Logan McGrew, concluding their six-run inning. The Hawks answered back in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run from Luis Acevedo. The Choctaws continued to pour it on, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by an RBI single from Dakota Kennedy. The runs continued to come in from the Choctaws, as they scored off of an RBI double from Jaron Harris, followed by an RBI single from Kennedy. The game's final run came from a sacrifice fly from McGrew to secure the victory for the Choctaws 13-3.

The Hawks will look to return home and bounce back quickly as they begin their homestand. The first pitch will be at 2 pm on Friday, March 26th, against the Auburn University of Montgomery. The doubleheader will be Saturday, March 27th; the first pitch will be at noon.
