HUNTSVILLE, Ala.— The Lady Hawks went 1-1 on Saturday with games against Kentucky Wesleyan and Delta State at the Chillout tournament.
In there Opening Weekend, Shorter ends with a 2-2 record and heads into conference play starting on February 20th.
GAME 1
The Lady Hawks came out swinging with a total of 10 hits to take the 6-4 win against Kentucky Wesleyan.
The Hawks kept the Panthers scoreless through four innings while Shorter got the bats started and scored their first run in the bottom of the 4th inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning Kiera Dudley tripled to left center then Colbi Ballard singled through the left side of the field while Dudley scored.
In the top of the fifth the Panthers rallied back and scored two runs on two hits. In the bottom of the fifth the Hawks came out ready to come back by scoring three runs on three hits. The scoring start with a sac fly to right field from Kaylee George which scored Sydney Poston to even the score 2-2. Dudley hit a singled to right field to score Alexa Varner and Payton Tuder to take the score 4-2.
The Lady Hawks did a pitching change in the top of the 6th Carlee Graham came in for Tuder. The Panthers rallied back to tie it up 4-4 with a fielding error by shortstop that scored two runs. Shorter came back in the bottom of the 6th with a double to left center from Graham which scored Poston and Angela Cecere. The Hawks defense and pitching stayed strong in the top of the 7th to finish the game with a 6-4 win.
GAME 2
The Hawks finished out the Chillout Tournament with a non conference game against Delta State. The Hawks came up short with Delta State taking the win 9-8.
In the top of the first inning, Kaylee Combs hit a homer over the left field fence with two RBI's as Graham scored to take the lead 2-0. Delta State came out in the bottom of the first and scored four runs on threes hits. With a scoreless second inning for both teams the Hawks came out in the top of the third with a double from Poston and then Graham hit a sac fly to score Poston to take the score 4-3 Delta State still holds the lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Delta State went on a scoring rally with five runs on four hits, 9-3. The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless for both teams.
In the top of the sixth Poston doubled to score Anslee Anderson and Dudley, 9-5. The Hawks tried to rally back in the top of the seventh inning with a double from Combs to score Hannah Morales. Dudley lined out to right field but Varner advanced to home. Then Anderson singled to right field which scored Kaylee George but the Hawks didn't have enough run and ended the seventh with a final score of 9-8
The Hawks will take on Valdosta State in their conference home opener on February, 20th with a double header starting at 1p.m and 3p.m.
