ROME,Ga.—The Lady Hawks had a hard fought battle with Life University on Wednesday night in the Winthrop King Centre. The Running Eagles took game to five sets and ended up with the win over Shorter. With some new faces on the court for the Hawks, Coach Sullivan made her head coaching debut after being hired back in February of 2020.
The Hawks will fall to 0-1 while the Running Eagles were fortunate enough to play in the fall and spring this season will improve to 12-2.
All five of the sets were super close with Shorter taking set one 25-22 and then Life taking set two 25-22. With a back-and-forth game on both sides of the net, in the fourth se the Hawks started to lose their momentum and let the Running Eagles take an eight point lead but the Hawks tried to come back at the end but couldn't quite get a grip on the lead and ended the fourth set 25-19.
Life lead Shorter into the fifth set taking the score to 22-20. The Hawks kept their fight all the way to the end of the game with some good volleys in between.
Top leaders for the Hawks include
Annie Veldhuis with 15 kills and four assisted blocks. Followed behind was
Katherine Patrick with 12 kills, six assisted blocks and three digs. Libero, Madison Sportsy, had a game high of 29 digs. For Life, Fay Louis had a game high of 17 kills.
The Hawks will head into conference play on March 6
th in Cleveland, Tenn. with games at 11a.m and 2p.m.
