Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jay Hawkins

Shorter comes up short against West Georgia

CARROLlTON, Ga. -- A day after the Shorter Men's basketball team won their opening game 75-70 over the University of West Georgia, the Wolves (1-3) got revenge, as they defeated the Hawks (1-1) 85-81 on Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop-King Centre.

Shorter jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the first half, highlighted by Ricky Knight's slam dunk. From there, West Georgia settled down, took the lead and stretched their winning margin to 15 with 1:44 left in the opening half, and the Wolves took a 43-31 advantage over the Hawks heading into the locker room.

It looked like West Georgia had the game in control at that point, but Shorter slowly chipped away at the Wolves' lead in the second half. With 6:02 left in the game, Shorter's Charles Botchway, who paced the Hawks in scoring, knocked down a huge 3-pointer to cut the Wolves' lead to one at 69-68.

Thanks to some success at the foul line, West Georgia extended their lead to seven at 80-73 with a little over two minutes left in regulation. The Hawks kept fighting, and Kelan Walker's 3-pointer cut the Shorter deficit to four with eight seconds remaining, but it was too little too late, as the Wolves held on to get the 85-81 victory.

As previously mentioned, Shorter's Botchway led the Hawks back to back days with 21 points including three 3-pointers and recorded six assists. Teammate Kelan Walker added 20 and was a perfect 3-3 from the free-throw stripe. Shorter's Jaden Dunham led the Hawks on the boards with seven rebounds to go along with his 12 points. West Georgia's Deng Nhial led both teams with 31 points.

With the loss, the Hawks will look to avenge their most recent loss on Friday, January 8th at Valdosta State University with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
