West Florida's scoring outburst too much for Hawks to handle

Box Score

Pensacola, Fla.-- The Shorter Hawks traveled to Pensacola, Fla., on Friday night to take on the University of West Florida in the first of two games between the two squads over the weekend. West Florida had lost five-straight games coming into Friday night, and it was clear from the opening tip that the Argonauts were fired up for this game and ready to get the sour taste of losing out of their mouths. The home side did just that as they soundly defeated the Hawks 101-65.

Shorter's Jay Shropshire led his team with 15 points in the loss, and teammate Jaden Dunham accounted for 13 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and a block. While Charles Botchway struggled scoring himself, he did lead the Hawks with nine assists in the game.

In contrast, the home side did not struggle to score in the slightest. The game was all West Florida from the get-go, and the Hawks could not handle the scoring barrage of the Argonauts.

West Florida's Tarik Mckelphin put up a game-high 33 points on an impressive 73.7 field goal percentage and added 10 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Daniel Sofield finished second on the Argonauts in scoring with 20 points, including going 4-5 from the 3-point line, and also accounted for seven rebounds.

The Hawks (1-7) will look to get a better result on Saturday, as their second game against the University of West Florida (3-6) will tipoff at 4 p.m.
