Game 3: Shorter 6, Miles 2
Shorter (2-0,0-0) jumped all over the Miles Golden Bears (0-2,0-0) in the first inning of game three of the series. The Hawks offense provided a big lead early, and
Jacob Arizpe and the other members of the Shorter pitching staff shut the door the rest of the way to propel Shorter to an opening weekend sweep.
Â
The Hawks started off hot with a 2RBI single to left field by
Cory Mason, scoring
Justin Guyton and
Bailey Gerstner. Luis Acevado followed that up with a bases loaded walk, and Nathanial Butterworth rounded out the first inning offensive barrage, with a bases clearing double to left center giving the Hawks an early 6-0 lead.
Â
Miles would score one in the third on an RBI single by Destin Davidson, and then another in the sixth on a Cody Hamilton single, but that would be all the offense that the Golden Bears could muster in the contest.
Â
Arizpe threw 6 strong innings for the Hawks allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, and striking out 2 in his first appearance, and win as a Shorter Hawk. Freshman
Sam Darling faced 1 batter, striking him out, and freshman
Brock Sinaly threw the final 2.2 innings on the mound for the Hawks, striking out two.
Â
The Hawks will be back in action in their home opening weekend series when they welcome Erskine to town on Saturday February 8
th, and then will host Mars-Hill on Sunday February 9
th in a double header. First pitch for Shorter vs. Erskine is 1 p.m. on Saturday, and first pitch for the double header against Mars-Hill is scheduled for 12 p.m on Sunday.
