Lady Hawks Gain First Win of Season

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga.— The Lady Hawks softball team was back in action on Sunday as they traveled to Young Harris to play Catawba and Lincoln Memorial. 

The Hawks gain their first win of the season and improve record to 1-9 overall while Catawba has an overall record of 6- and Lincoln Memorial with a record of 10-1. 

Shorter 12, Catawba 11

Shorter started out by putting a run up on the board first. In the first inning Kiera Dudley lined out to right field and scored Sydney Poston and then Lindsay Newell got on with a fielder's choice and scored Hannah Morales. The Indians tied the game up on a hit up the middle and then scored on a sacrifice fly to take the lead to 3-2. In the top of the second Angela Cecere reached first on an error which scored a run. Kaylee Combs hit a double to left center to score Sydney Poston. The Indians tied it up in the bottom of the second with a score of 4-4. The Hawks had a breakout inning in the top of the fifth by scoring a total of five runs to take the lead to 11-4. But the Indians came back to tie it up with a homerun by Jordan Dean to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the 8th, Ashley Langel doubled to left center to score Newell. Catawba wasn't able to move their runner from second to score. The Hawks won their first game of the season with a final score of 12-11. 

Morales went 3-4 with two stolen bases, Dudley, Newell, Alexis Sewell, Langel, Paytn Cripps and Cecere each had one hit. Also, Cecere recorded a stolen base and Courtney Pinkston got the win. 

Lincoln Memorial 6, Shorter 2

The Hawks tried to put something together in the top of the seventh but were unable to get a rally going. Hannah Morales had another multiple hit game by going 2-3 at the plate and being the first run to go up on the board for the Hawks. In the bottom of the 7th, Cecere started the inning off with a single to centerfield and then Poston was hit by a pitch and Cecere advanced to second. Morales singles and Tiffany Watson grounds out to score Cecere with the final score being 6-2 and the Railspliters take the win. 

Sewell went 2-3 and Poston, Dudley, Langel and Newell each added in one hit. 

Up Next

The Hawks will play their home opener series against West Georgia on Friday and Saturday with first pitch on Friday scheduled for 6p.m.
