Cripps and Dudley Homer in Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga.— The Shorter University Softball team opened up Gulf South Conference play this weekend at #24 Valdosta State University. With an 0-3 weekend the Hawks fall to 0-8 on the season and 0-3 in Gulf South Conference while the Blazers improve to 8-3 and 3-0 in the GSC. 

Saturday

#24 Valdosta State 6, Shorter 4 

 The Hawks battled with the Blazers all throughout the game but were unable to string anything together in the top of the 7th. 

In the top of the second the Hawks were the first to score as Kiera Dudley walked and then Ashley Langel hit a single to score Dudley. In the bottom of the second, Valdosta answered back with a homer from Kiley Robb to tie the game up, 1-1. 

Shorter kept the bats hot in the top of the third with Sydney Postion starting off the inning by reaching first on an error from the Blazers, Hannah Morales singled and Dudley roped a three run shot to centerfield to put Shorter up 4-1. The Blazers came back in the bottom of the third with a double by Taylor Macera and a two-run homer from Jordenne Gaten. 

Valdosta came back with a few doubles and singles to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, 6-4. 

With two outs in the top of the seventh Taylor Phillips got on with an infield single and pinch-hitter Kaylee Combs singled but the Hawks were unable to score. 

Shellby Young took the loss by pitching five innings, no walks, and three strikeouts. The Hawks had a total of five hits and left three on base. 

#24 Valdosta State 8, Shorter 0

Valdosta's Morgan Cushman shut the Hawks bats down by only allowing two hits and three walks. 

The two hits from the Lady Hawks came from Combs and Angela Cecere with both of them producing singles in the fourth and fifth inning. 

Courtney Pinkston, pitcher, took the loss in the circle with two strikeouts, four walks, and five hits. 

Sunday 

#24 Valdosta State 10, Shorter 4

In the final game of the series the Hawks had a total of four hits and left five on base. 

The top of the fourth the Hawks got the bats going with Lindsay Newell starting out the inning with a single down the left field line, Ashley Langel was hit by a pitch and then Paytn Cripps blasted a shot to centerfield for a three-run homer. Morales and Dudley each added a hit for the Hawks.

Shorter University Softball will travel to Blairsville, Ga for two games on Sunday, February 23rd. First game against Catawba College is slated for a first pitch at 1:30p.m. and then Columbus State University at 4p.m.
