Volleyball Falls in Two Tough GSC Matches

ROME, Ga. – For the second day in a row, the Hawks (6-10, 0-4 Gulf South) fell in conference play. On Friday night, Shorter was swept by the University of Montevallo and the dropped a five-set thriller to the University of Alabama Huntsville. Alabama-Huntsville and Montevallo are currently both tied at second place in the Gulf South standings with a 4-1 record in conference play.
 
Friday – vs Montevallo
Despite the results ending as a sweep, Shorter's volleyball program played a very tightly contested matchup against Montevallo. With the final scores of the sets finishing as 25-22, 25-23, and 26-24, the games were right there for either team to take.
Mirella Gatterdam led the way for Shorter with 19 kills, while Paris Bucker added 13 of her own. Kendall Vondra and Gabrielle Hogle both tallied double-digit assists, recording 16 and 11 assists, respectively.
Emily Wilson led the Hawks with 13 digs in the contest, while Lacee Glover (9) and Vondra (8) were right behind her.
 
Saturday – vs Alabama-Huntsville
In a back and forth thriller, Shorter was unable to knock off one of the top teams in the Gulf South.
Shorter claimed set one by a score of 25-22 before Alabama-Huntsville took sets two and three by scores of 26-24 and 25-13. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks bounced back and took set four from the Chargers by a score of 25-19.
The deciding fifth set was a back and forth battle with the Chargers coming out victorious by a score of 15-12.
Three players recorded double-digit kill totals for the Hawks in the contest – Gatterdam (19), Buckner (13), and Veldhuis (11). Vondra and Hogle eclipsed 20 assists each on the afternoon. Vondra picked up 29 assists while Hogle contributed 22.
Wilson tallied 36 digs to lead all players throughout the afternoon.
 
Up Next:
Shorter volleyball hits the road next weekend for a Tennessee road trip. The Hawks begin the road trip with a Friday night contest in Jackson, Tennessee against Union University. On Saturday afternoon, Shorter heads to Memphis where they'll battle Christian Brothers University. The road trip concludes on Tuesday when the Hawks travel to Cleveland, Tennessee to take on Lee University.
