Defense Shines at Homecoming

ROME, Ga. – One of the games that every football team circles on their schedules annually is the homecoming game. Saturday afternoon featured the 2019 edition of the Shorter University (0-7, 0-5 Gulf South) homecoming game, which they dropped to North Greenville University (3-4, 2-2 Gulf South) 7-0.

In a game that was heavily influenced by the effects of Tropical Storm Nestor, both North Greenville and Shorter had to get creative with their game plans. Both schools have developed a presence with a run game throughout the season, but both teams have had more success throwing the football.

Shorter's defense gave them an outstanding chance to win the ballgame and kept them competitive in the face of adversity. Xavier Robinson once again led the Hawks with eight tackles; bringing his team-leading total to 53. Not far behind were Nehemiah Reddish, Brent Silvar, and Terrance Snellings. Reddish had seven tackles, while Silvar and Snellings both added six.

Hawks defenders combined for seven tackles for a loss in the contest. Robinson, Silvar, Snellings, Ethan Manns, Dejon Walden, and Kevin Zachary were all credited with a tackle for a loss of some sort.

The Shorter secondary also made several big plays that kept Shorter in a tight battle throughout the rain-soaked afternoon. In the second quarter, Caleb Mason intercepted a North Greenville pass to swing some of the momentum back in the Hawks favor. Just before halftime, Christian James-Lattore had a timely pass breakup in the end zone to keep the Crusaders from scoring,

Offensively, Shorter struggled to put anything together, mustering just 180 yards of total offense. Tupac Lanier led all rushers with 33 yards on 11 carries. Kameron King hauled in five passes for 50 yards and Christian Da-Silva caught four passes for 37 yards.

Next Up:
Next Saturday, Shorter will head to Cleveland, Mississippi to take on Mississippi College. The 4:00 PM kickoff will be Mississippi College's homecoming game, where Shorter looks to spoil the festivities.
