Hawks fall to Montevallo in season finale

Montevallo used three late goals to top the Hawks 9-7 Friday afternoon in the season finale for both teams.

With the loss, Shorter finishes the year 1-13 overall and 0-5 in the GLVC; while the Falcons finish the year 7-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The Hawks opened the scoring, as Tate Tatum found the back of the net on a pass from Logan Miller for the 1-0 advantage with 13:16 to play in the first. Only to have Montevallo answer with three straight to take the lead. Shorter countered with a second goal before the end of the first to cut the lead to one, 3-2, on a goal from Matt McHugh.

Before Tatum opened the scoring in the second to tie the game. From there it was back and forth, with neither team making a sizable run. For the period, Shorter added goals from Chase Rogers and Miller; while the Falcons scored twice to take a 5-5 tie into halftime.

After the break, Tatum gave the Hawks a 6-5 advantage with his third goal of the game midway through the third. Montevallo answered with a goal, before Shorter tallied one more – from Rogers – to hold a 7-6 lead as the game moved to the final fifteen minutes.

The fourth was all Montevallo as they held the Hawks scoreless; while adding three goals for the 9-7 final score.

In total, Montevallo outshot the Hawks 41-26; while holding a 28-15 advantage in shots on goal and 39-28 lead in ground balls. Shorter led in face-off wins 11-8.

Individually, Tatum led the offense with three goals; while Rogers added two and both, Miller and McHugh, finished with a goal and an assist. Miller added a team high six ground balls. Garry Robinson played the complete game in goal, making 19 saves.
