ROME -- The Hawks split the Friday doubleheader with Alabama Huntsville; falling in game one 16-2, before coming back in the finale to win 4-1.
Shorter moves to 15-17 on the season and 6-11 in conference play; while the Chargers move to 17-15 overall and 9-8 in the GSC.
GAME 1: UAH 16, SU 2
Game one was all UAH as the Chargers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings, before the Hawks rallied for a run in the fifth on as
Micah Wyatt scored on a sacrifice fly from
Raul Cortes. Alabama Huntsville countered with four in the sixth to extend their lead to 13-1, before a solo homerun from
Angel Acosta in the bottom of the inning brought the score to 13-2. UAH then added three in the seventh to cut the game short with the 16-2 advantage after seven innings.
Victor Santana made the start for the Hawks, and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Shorter tallied nine hits in the game, with
Ivan Nunez finishing 2-3 at the plate.
GAME 2: SU 4, UAH 1
Shorter opened the scoring in the fourth inning of game two, as
Matt Christian recorded his fourth homerun of the year – a solo shot to right field – for the 1-0 score. And, added to it in the fifth with a run on an RBI double from
Victor Perez. Before, adding two in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-0. First as Christian scored on a groundout from
Luis Acevedo, and then as
Samyr Santos delivered an RBI single to left field.
UAH's only run of the game came in the seventh on an RBI double down the left field line from Jay Copeland.
Banks Woodley earned the win, pitching the complete game; allowing one run on seven hits with a two walks and seven strikeouts.
Christian finished 2-2 at the plate with a walk and a home run.

The Hawks will be back in action Saturday afternoon in the series finale with the Chargers. Game time from the Ledbetter Baseball Complex is set form 12:00pm.
