Softball completes series sweep of No. 22 UAH

ROME -- The Lady Hawks completed the three-game sweep of No. 22 Alabama Huntsville, winning both games of the Thursday doubleheader. Game scores were 6-5 and 2-1, respectively.

With the wins, Shorter improves to 15-16 on the season and 10-10 in conference play; while the Chargers slip to 23-10 overall and 13-8 in the GSC.

GAME 1: SU 6, UAH 5
The Chargers scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run homer from Alaina Hampton, before adding a run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0. Shorter then came back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to one. First, as Maddie Hunt scored on a single up the middle from Taylor Martin; who scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice for the 3-2 score.

UAH answered in the fifth to regain the 2-run advantage with an RBI single from Brooke Miller. Only to have the Lady Hawks rally in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Kiera Dudley led off the inning with a single, and reached second on a throwing error from the pitcher on a fielder's choice, before coming in on an error from the third baseman. Shorter then loaded the bases, bringing up Carson Carriker; who delivered a bases clearing double down the left field line for the 6-4 score.

The Chargers then added a run in the top of the seventh for the 6-5 final score.

Julie Sanderlin earned the win, pitching the final three innings; allowing two runs on five hits with a walk a strikeout. Hannah Draper made the start, pitching four innings; allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Dudley finished 2-3 at the plate with a run scored; while Carriker recorded a hit and three RBI.

GAME 2: SU 2, UAH 1
The finale remained scoreless until the fourth when UAH struck for a run on a solo homerun from Kiara Ackles to give the Chargers the 1-0 advantage. Shorter then rallied in the sixth to earn the win, scoring twice on a two-run single from Dani Lukas – brining in Carriker and Martin who each reached base after being hit by a pitch. The Lady Hawks threatened for more, but came up short as Lukas and Langel were left on base.

The Chargers put a runner on in the seventh on a bunt single, only to have her thrown out attempting to steal second to end the game.

Payton Lippert earned the win, allowing one run on six hits with a walk and six strikeout through a complete game performance.

Hunt led the offense with two hits; while Lukas finished with a hit and two RBI.

UP NEXT
The Lady Hawks will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on GSC newcomer Auburn Montgomery in a three game set. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2:00pm ET.
