Cleveland, Miss. --Â Delta State used late comebacks in both games to earn the doubleheader sweep of the Lady Hawks Saturday afternoon, by scores of 8-7 and 3-2, respectively.
With the losses, Shorter moves to 12-15 overall and 7-9 in the GSC; while the Lady Statesmen improve to 17-16 on the season and 8-9 in conference play.
GAME 1: DSU 8, SU 7
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a big lead in the opener, scoring five in the first inning. The first runs of the game came as
Kaylee Combs delivered her fourth homerun of the season to bring in
Carson Carriker and
Taylor Martin; who reached base on a double and a hit by pitch, respectively. Before, a two run double later in the inning from
Ashley Langel made it a 5-0 game.
Delta State answered in the bottom of the inning for a run to cut into the lead. Only to have Shorter maintain the advantage on a two-run homer from Langel in the third, for the 7-1 score. From there, however, the Lady Statesmen rallied; adding seven unanswered runs to earn the 8-7 win.
Julie Sanderlin made the start, allowing four earned runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout through 2.1 innings.
Payton Lippert came on in relief, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and strikeout in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
Langel finished the game 3-4 at the plate with four RBI.
Abi Valdes added two hits; while Combs finished the day with a hit and three RBI.
GAME 2: DSU 3, SU 2
Again, Shorter scored first, as Combs brought in Carriker on an RBI single in the first inning to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 advantage. Delta State tied the game in the third with a run, before Shorter regained the lead on an error in the sixth for the 2-1 score. Down to their last at bat, the Lady Statesmen came back in the seventh with a pair of runs to earn the win 3-2.
Hannah Draper took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits with a strikeout through 6.1 innings.
