Lee tops Lady Hawks in GSC action

ROME -- The Lady Hawks fell to Lee, 20-11, Saturday afternoon at home.

With the loss, Shorter moves to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in conference play; while the Flames improve to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the GSC.

Lee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead; only to have the Lady Hawks answer with three straight to regain the advantage. McKinley Puckett put Shorter on the board with her first goal of the afternoon with 26:27 to play and was followed by Tiffany Kongpachith moments later; before Maria Hansen closed out the run with a score of her own at the 21:33 mark. The Flames countered to tie the game, but Shorter answered to regain the lead on Aubrey Geiger's first goal of the game. From there, however, Lee put the game away as they scored the next ten goals to take a 14-4 advantage in the opening seconds of the second half.

The Lady Hawks picked things up in the second half, outscoring the Flames 7-6 over the period, but the lead was already too great to overcome. Shorter got things going in the half on back-to-back goals from Kongpachith and Puckett. Before trading goals over the remainder of the game for the 20-11 score. During the half Puckett, Geiger and Perry each scored as well.

In total, Lee outshot the Lady Hawks 40-20; holding a 33-17 advantage in shots on goal. Shorter led in draw controls 17-16, while both teams tallied 23 ground balls.

Puckett led the offensive effort for the Lady Hawks scoring four goals – all on free position attempts – while, Kongpachith added three, and Geiger finished with two. Puckett turned in a team high, four caused turnovers; while Tayler Ferqueron caused three to goal along with five ground balls and seven draw controls. Peyton Reid played the complete game in goal, making 13 saves.

Emma Hill and Becca Broadwick led the Flames with four goals and one assist apiece. While, Broadwick also added four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

The Lady Hawks will close out the home portion of their schedule Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm against Montevallo at Ben Brady Field.
