Montevallo rolls past Lady Hawks

ROME -- The Lady Hawks fells to Montevallo, 25-13, in the final home game of the season Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, Shorter moves to 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in conference play; while the Falcons improve to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the GSC.

McKinley Puckett opened the scoring for Shorter, turning in her first goal of the afternoon in the opening seconds of the game and after two from Montevallo, she added a second to tie the game 2-2 with 26:54 to play in the first. The Falcons answered with three to extend their advantage, only to have the Lady Hawks tally three straight to tie the game at 5-5 with 18:10 remaining. Aubrey Geiger tallied the first of the run and was followed by Anna Kate Dulaney on a pass from Tiffany Kongpachith and a third from Puckett. Montevallo then regained the lead on back-to-back scores before Shorter cut the lead back to one when Geiger found the back of the net for the second time of the game. The Falcons closed out the period with a 6-1 run to take a 13-7 advantage into halftime.

Montevallo extended its lead in the opening minutes of the second half, leading 16-7 when the Lady Hawks tallied two – both from Geiger - to cut into the lead. But, countered with eight straight to put the game away, making it a 24-9 game with just over twelve minutes remaining. Through the final eight minutes, Shorter outscored the Falcons 4-1; with Geiger adding two goals and Kongpachith and Bailey Skiles each recording one for the 25-13 final score.

In total, Montevallo outshot the Lady Hawks 46-28; holding a 42-22 advantage in shots on goal and leading 30-17 in ground balls. While, also winning 21 of the 38 draws.

Geiger led the Lady Hawks with a season/career high six goals and two assists to finished with eight points on the afternoon. While, Puckett added three goals and an assist; as well as, turning in a team high in draw controls (8) and caused turnovers (3). Peyton Reid made season high 17 saves in goal for the game.

The Lady Hawks will close out the season with four games on the road; travelling to Young Harris on March 31 for an 11:00am start against the Mountain Lions.
