Lady Hawks split with West Georgia

ROME -- The Lady Hawks split the Friday doubleheader with West Georgia. Winning the opener 5-0, before falling in the finale 8-1.

Shorter moves to 12-13 overall and 7-7 in the GSC; while the Wolves move to 15-9 on the season and 8-7 in conference play.

GAME 1: SU 5, UWG 0
Friday's opener was all Shorter, as they Lady Hawks blanked the Wolves en route to the 5-0 win. Shorter opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs, as Dani Lukas brought in Taylor Martin and Carson Carriker on a double to right field. Before adding to it in the second inning with three runs for the 5-0 score. Abi Valdes scored the first run of the inning as she came in on a fielder's choice from Maddie Hunt when an errant throw from the third baseman allowed the run to score. Martin followed later in the inning with an RBi single and Kaylee Combs brought in Hunt on a fielder's choice.

Payton Lippert pitched the complete game shutout, allowing three hits and two walks; while striking out four.

Lukas finished the game 2-3 at the plate with two RBI.

GAME 2: UWG 8, SU 1
Scoreless through three, West Georgia took the lead 1-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Lexie Close. Only to have the Lady Hawks tie the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from Valdes. Through the next two innings both teams threatened, with each stranding runners. Before the Wolves pulled through in their last at bat to earn the win; tallying seven runs on six hits, for the 8-1 final score.

Hannah Draper took the loss; allowing seven earned runs on fifteen hits with a walk.

Five players finished with a hit in the game.

UP NEXT
The Lady Hawks will be back in action next weekend at Delta State. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2:00pm ET from Cleveland, Miss.
