ROME --Â The Lady Hawks downed the Wolves of West Georgia 12-9 Thursday afternoon at Alto Park.
With the win, Shorter moves to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in the GSC; while the UWG moves to 14-8 on the season and 7-6 in conference play.
The Wolves got on the board first, scoring three times in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Only to have the Lady Hawks come back in the bottom of the inning as
Kaylee Combs delivered her third homerun in as many games, plating
Carson Carriker for the 3-2 score. West Georgia extended their advantage to 4-2 with a run in the third.
From there, however, Shorter pulled away, tacking on nine runs in the third to take the lead 11-4.
Maddie Hunt and
Taylor Martin scored the innings first runs as Combs notched a 2-run single up the middle. The Lady Hawks then loaded the bases, bringing
Abi Valdes to the plate; where she made it a 7-4 advantage on a double through the right side, and came in a batter later on a ground out from
Amelia Olive.
Tiffany Holland scored on an error, and Martin brought in two on a double to left field for the 11-4 score.
In the fourth, the Wolves added a two-run homer to cut into the lead. Before the Lady Hawks tacked on a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to make it a 12-6 game. West Georgia threatened in the fifth, adding three runs for the 12-9 final score.
Julie Sanderlin earned the win, allowing six earned runs on eleven hits with a walk and six strikeouts. While,
Hannah Draper recorded the save, keeping the wolves scoreless on two hits through 2.1 innings.
Hunt, Martin, Combs and Newell each finished two hits; while Combs and Valdes finished with four RBI apiece.
The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader Friday afternoon beginning at 1:00pm at Alto Park.
