Lady Hawks win two at Charger Chillout

Huntsville, Ala. -- The Lady Hawks earned the two game sweep in play at the Charger Chillout hosted by Alabama Huntsville Friday afternoon. Opening the day with a 4-0 win over 14th-ranked Missouri-St. Louis, before closing out the day with a 7-4 win over Ohio Dominican.

Game one was all Shorter, as the Lady Hawks jumped out an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Tiffany Holland scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, before Taylor Martin delivered her second homerun of the year, plating Dani Lukas for the 3-0 advantage. And, added to it in the third on an RBI double from Lindsey Newell for the 4-0 final score. UMSL threatened in the seventh, loading the bases, before getting Reagan Olson to foul out to first base to end the game.

Payton Lippert pitched the complete game, holding the Tritons scoreless on four hits with three strikeouts.

Lukas and Holland each finished with two hits in the game, while Martin added two RBI.

In game two, Ohio Dominican struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. It was short lived, however, as the Lady Hawks tallied a run of their own in the bottom of the inning as Holland came in on a wild pitch. Shorter then made it a 4-1 game in the third as Newell notched her first career homerun, a three-run shot to left center, plating Holland and Maddie Hunt.

The Lady Hawks added two in the fifth to extend their lead as Hunt scored on an error and Holland came in on a ground out from Carson Carriker. ODU cut into the lead in the sixth with a run, only to have Shorter regain the five-run advantage in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun from Ashley Langel. The Panther tacked on two runs in the seventh for the 7-4 final score.

Hannah Draper pitched the complete game for the Lady Hawks, earning the win; allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Five different players finished with a hit in the game, while Newell led the effort with three RBI.

The Lady Hawks will be on the road Wednesday, February 14, as they travel to North Georgia for a midweek non-conference matchup. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00pm from Dahlonega, Ga.
