Montgomery, Ala. --Â The Lady Hawks used their last at-bat to take down No. 3 West Florida to start Gulf South Conference play Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Shorter moves to 4-4 on the year and 1-0 in the GSC; while the Argos move to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Lady Hawks got on the board first, scoring twice in the first inning to take the lead. First, as
Tiffany Holland came in on a throwing error by the catcher after a bunt single from
Carson Carriker; who scored when Keira Dudley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
West Florida answered in the third with a run to cut the lead in half, before adding three in the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage.
Shorter countered with a run in the first as
Taylor Martin scored on an error to make it a 4-3 game. Then, rallied in the seventh for two to earn the win. Carriker walked to start the inning and moved to third on a double down the right field line from
Lindsey Newell, before coming in on a single to left from Martin.
Abi Valdes, who pinch ran for Newell, followed with the winning run, as she scored on an RBI single from Dudley for the 5-4 final score.
Newell and Martin each recorded two hits in the game; while Dudley added a run and two RBIs.
Payton Lippert earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts through a complete game performance.
The Lady Hawks will continue play at the GSC Festival Sunday afternoon against Christian Brothers and West Alabama at 1:00pm ET and 3:30pm ET, respectively.
