Lady Hawks rally for win over No. 3 West Florida

Montgomery, Ala. -- The Lady Hawks used their last at-bat to take down No. 3 West Florida to start Gulf South Conference play Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Shorter moves to 4-4 on the year and 1-0 in the GSC; while the Argos move to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Lady Hawks got on the board first, scoring twice in the first inning to take the lead. First, as Tiffany Holland came in on a throwing error by the catcher after a bunt single from Carson Carriker; who scored when Keira Dudley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

West Florida answered in the third with a run to cut the lead in half, before adding three in the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage.

Shorter countered with a run in the first as Taylor Martin scored on an error to make it a 4-3 game. Then, rallied in the seventh for two to earn the win. Carriker walked to start the inning and moved to third on a double down the right field line from Lindsey Newell, before coming in on a single to left from Martin. Abi Valdes, who pinch ran for Newell, followed with the winning run, as she scored on an RBI single from Dudley for the 5-4 final score.

Newell and Martin each recorded two hits in the game; while Dudley added a run and two RBIs.

Payton Lippert earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts through a complete game performance.

The Lady Hawks will continue play at the GSC Festival Sunday afternoon against Christian Brothers and West Alabama at 1:00pm ET and 3:30pm ET, respectively.
