ROME -- The Hawks topped Georgia College, 6-4, in non-conference action from the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Shorter improves to 9-7 overall; while the Bobcats move to 9-5 on the season.
Georgia College got on the board first, scoring in the second on an RBI single from Mike Warren. Only to have the Hawks come back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead on a two-run single from
Matt Christian.
Shorter added to it in the third when
Isaiah Maddela came in on a fielder's choice to make it a 3-1 game. The Bobcats cut the lead on one in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Purcell. But, the Hawks rallied in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 5-2 on RBI hits from Maddela and
Nathaniel Butterworth. Before making it a 7-2 game in the eighth as
Hunter Reaid scored on a fielder's choice.
Georgia College rallied for a two runs in the ninth for the 6-4 final score.
Hawks starter,
Jesse Wheeler, nearly went the distance, pitching into the ninth; allowing four runs on ten hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Earning his first win of the year.
Caleb Battles recorded his first save of the season, coming in in the ninth to close out the game – retiring three of the four batters he faced.
Maddela finished the day 3-5 at the plate with a pair of RBI; while seven other Hawks tallied on hit apiece.
Shorter will return to action and Gulf South Conference play this weekend at the host Mississippi College in a three game set. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00pm, with Sunday's finale schedule for 1:00pm.
