Carrollton, Ga. --Â Amonte Potter surpassed 1,000 career points Wednesday night as the Hawks fell to West Georgia 106-97 on the road.
With the loss, Shorter moves to 3-23 on the season and 3-15 in conference play; while the Wolves improve to 12-13 overall and 7-11 in the GSC. The teams split the season series, with each winning their respective home game.
The game was back-and-forth throughout, with the Wolves hold a slim 42-38 lead the halftime break. Through the first twenty minutes, neither team could pull away as they stayed close, trading the lead eleven times in the period and seeing three tied scores.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Shorter responded to take the lead on back to back threes from
Jacob Newman and
Josh Burnett. And, from there extended their advantage to as many as 11 – on a layup from
Drew Thomas with 12:42 to play. From there, West Georgia begin chipping away; cutting the lead to two (72-70) with an 11-2 over the next four minutes. Shorter maintained the advantage, despite the pressure from the Wolves, until the five-minute mark when a layup from Marquill Smith made it an 87-85 game in West Georgia's favor.
The Hawks countered with a layup from Burnett to regain the lead. Only to have the Wolves answer with three to take the advantage for good as they went on to outscore Shorter 16-9 through the final minutes for the 106-97 score.
Pottter entered the game, 11 points shy of 1,000 and saw the milestone point tallied with this first basket of the second half, before going on to finish with a team high 26.
TayVaughn Major added 23 points and nine rebounds; while Newman chipped in with 19. Every player for the Hawks finished with at least four points and two rebounds for the game.
Smith led the Wolves with a game high 40 points.
The Hawks will return to action, and the Winthrop-King Centre for the final two games of the season; hosting Montevallo Saturday, February 17, at 4:00 and Lee on Thursday, February 22, at 8:00pm.
