Lady Hawks top West Georgia on the road

Carrollton, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks split the season series with West Georgia, earning the 71-59 win over the Wolves Wednesday night from Carrollton.

Shorter moves to 7-17 overall and 5-13 in conference play; while 14-11 on the season and 10-8 in the GSC.

After trading baskets and lead throughout the first quarter, the Lady Hawks held a slim 16-15 advantage as the game moved to the second. Where, Shorter quickly extended its lead to five, 20-15, on a pair of free throws from Tatum Ragsdale. Only to have the Wolves come back to erase the deficit on a 10-0 run, making it a 25-20 game in their favor midway through the period. Before adding to it with ten more over the final minutes, holding the Lady Hawks to four, to take a 35-24 advantage into halftime.

In the third quarter the Lady Hawks picked things up, outscoring the Wolves by ten over the period. And took the lead, 46-44, on a three from Bianca Thornton in the final seconds. And, from there never trailed, building their lead to as many as 12 late, and holding on for the 71-59 win.

For the night, Shorter shot 43 percent; while converting 33 percent from beyond the arc and 79 percent from the free throw line. West Georgia finished with a 40 percent night, while hitting just 7 percent of their attempts from long range.

Thornton led the offense with 22 points; while Denise Newton tallied 16 and reigning GSC Freshman of the Week, Jasmine Gaines, added 11.

Aysha Harris paced the Wolves with 20 points.

The Lady Hawks return home for the final two games of the year, hosting Montevallo on Saturday at 2:00pm and Lee on Thursday at 6:00pm.
