Jackson, Tenn. --Â The Lady Hawks made the 12th-ranked Union squad work Thursday night, as they held the GSC leader to its lowest totals of the year in a 62-46 win for the home team.
Win the loss, Shorter moves to 5-13 overall and 3-9 in the GSC; while the Lady Bulldogs improve to 19-1 on the season and 12-0 in conference play.
The Lady Hawks opened the game with a 5-0 run; thanks to back-to-back baskets from
Denise Newton and
Bianca Thornton. Only to have the Lady Bulldogs answer with six straight to take the 6-5 lead, while their first field goal of the contest didn't come until midway through the opening period. Shorter answered to regain the advantage with a three from Thornton, before the teams traded baskets to take an 11-11 game into the second quarter.
Where Union scored first to regain the advantage, 14-11, on the three-point play from Jada Perkins. Shorter countered with a layup from
Roni Richardson and a three from
Tatum Ragsdale to swing the advantage back into their favor, 16-14, with 7:43 to play in the half. Before the teams once again traded baskets, with the Lady Hawks holding a 20-19 advantage at the 4:36 mark. The Lady Bulldogs then closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 23-27 lead into halftime.
Union opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to ten, 35-25, on a pair of free throws from Sara Lytle midway through the period. Only to have the Lady Hawks cut the lead to three on a layup from
Raven Fair to cap an 11-3 run over the next three minutes. The Lady Bulldogs added five free throws over the final minute for the 44-36 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Hawks cut the Union lead to as little as five during the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as they'd get as the Lady Bulldogs closed out the game on a 16-5 run for the 62-46 final score.
On the night, the Lady Hawks shot 30 percent; while keeping the league leader to its lowest percentages of the season – 33 percent from the field and 19 percent from three. With the difference in the game coming as Union converted 19-28 from the free throw line, whereas as Shorter was 3 of 6 for the night.
Thornton led the Lady Hawks with 14 points and eight rebounds.
BreAnna Thompson added nine points and Newton chipped in with eight.
Lytle led Union with 26 points; while reigning GSC Player of the Week Chelsea Shumpert added 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Hawks will look to get back in the win column Saturday as they stay on the road at Christian Brothers. Game time is set for 2:00pm ET from Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn.
