Jackson, Tenn. --Â The Hawks fell to Union, 90-81, Thursday night on the road.
With the loss, Shorter moves to 3-17 overall and 3-9 in the GSC; while the Bulldogs improve to 9-11 on the season and 3-9 in conference play.
The Hawks came out strong, taking the lead early on a layup from
Josh Burnett, before adding to it to lead by four with 17:03 to play in the first. Union answered to take the lead moments later. Shorter quickly regrouped to regain the advantage but weren't able to pull away as the Bulldogs tallied a 13-3 run to make it an eight-point game at the midway point in the half. The Hawks countered with a 16-8 run to of their own to make it a 39-37 game in their favor on a three from Burnett at the 5:02 mark in the half, only to have Union regain the lead seconds later for good.
Shorter came out slow in the second half, while the Bulldogs opened the period on a 17-2 run to extend their lead to sixteen with just over 14:00 to play. Down the stretch, the Hawks came back, cutting into the lead; using a 13-5 run later in the frame, to cut the lead to ten, but that would be as close as they'd get as Union held on for 90-81 win.
For the game, the Haws shot 47 percent; while the Bulldogs turned in a 60 percent shooting night.
Amonte Potter led the offensive effort, turning in 25 points on the night; while Burnett added 17,
TayVaughn Major chipped in the 15 and
Jonathan Mason added 10. On the night, all seven players tallied at least three points, with each recording a rebound as well.
Tyree Boykin led Union with 25 points, including finishing 7-7 from the free throw line.
The Hawks will look to get back in the win column Saturday as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to take on Christian Brothers at 4:00pm ET.
