ROME --Â The Hawks fell to 15th-ranked West Florida, 81-65, Tuesday evening from the Winthrop-King Centre.
With the loss, Shorter moves to 1-12 on the season and 1-4 in the GSC; while Argos remain unbeaten at 12-0, 4-0 in the conference.
The Hawks kept things close through the first half, using a 10-2 run to take a 15-13 lead with 15:16 to play on a three from
Josh Burnett. Only to have the Argos tally a 7-2 run to regain the lead, 20-17. Shorter then tied things up on a three from
Jonathan Mason moments later, but weren't able to get over the hump as UWF posted back-to-back free throws to regain the advantage. Down the stretch, the Hawks cut the lead to as little as two, but the Argos closed out the period with a 13-8 run to hold a 43-36 lead at the break.
West Florida added to their lead in the opening minutes of the second period, using a 18-5 run to make it a 20-point game, 61-41, on a three from Rashaan Benson with 14:10 on the clock. And, from there were able to maintain the advantage, earning the win 81-65.
Four Hawks finished in double-figures; led by
Amonte Potter with 24.
Jonathan Mason added 12 points – all on three-pointers; while
Josh Burnett and
TayVaughn Major added 10 apiece.
Moter Deng led the Argos with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Hawks will be back in action Thursday, January 4, when they welcome Valdosta State to the Winthrop-King Centre for an 8:00pm start.Â
