Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. -- The Lady Hawks opened the year, splitting day one of the Queens University of Charlotte Fall Invitational; topping Francis Marion, 3-0, before falling to host, Queens, 3-0.
Set scores in the win over the Patriots were 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16; while the Royals used set scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-22 to take the win in match two.
In the opening match of the day, the Lady Hawks were dominant on the serve, tallying 11 aces in the game with
Sofia Stephens tallying five, and
Morgan Cleveland adding four. While, also making the most of their play at the net, holding an 8-1 advantage in blocks with
Tiffani Estep leading the way with four.
Madeline Munroe led the attack in game one, turning in ten kills. Estep chipped in the seven for Shorter, and
Hannah Flack added six in the win.
Tinsley Fain and
Iva Luther split time in the match at the setter position with Fain providing 19 assists and Luther dishing out 15.
On defense,
Cheyenne McLemore led the way with 20 digs, while Fain added ten for Shorter. At the net, in addition to Estsep's four blocks, Flack, Munroe and
Kelsi Jones each had a hand in two.
In match two of the day, both teams finished with five aces; while the Lady Hawks once again played strong at the net with a 5-1 advantage in blocks.
On offense, Estep, Jones and Flack each posted seven kills; while
Danielle Melton and Munroe chipped in with six apiece. Fain and Luther tallied 18 and 11 assists, respectively. And, Cleveland brought her day's ace total to seven with three against Queens.
McLemore was the lone Lady Hawk to finish in double-figures in digs in the match, adding 19. While, Jones led the night in blocks with four – one solo and three assisted. Flack also had a hand in three in the loss.
Shorter will look to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon against Wingate and California of Pennsylvania. Game times are set for 12:00pm and 4:00pm, respectively.
