Lady Hawks complete sweep of CBU in regular season finale

MEMPHIS -- The Lady Hawks closed out the regular season with a 14-5 win over Christian Brothers on the road.

Shorter (28-22, 17-15 GSC) jumped out to an early first inning lead, scoring four times. First, as Tiffany Holland came in on an error by the shortstop. Then, as Savannah Thomas delivered an RBI single to plate Maddie Hunt, before Kameron Carter came in on a fielder's choice and Thomas scored on a ground out. The Lady Bucs (6-44, 0-33 GSC) answered in the bottom of the innings with a pair of runs to cut the lead in half 4-2.

Both teams added a run in the second for the 5-3 score. Shorter's came as Carter delivered an RBI triple to right field, plating Hunt. In the fourth, both teams again struck for one, with the Lady Hawks scoring on a line out from Carter.

While, in the fifth Shorter tacked on four to bring their advantage to 10-4. First as Taylor Martin notched her second homerun of the year, then as Abi Valdes came in on a line out from Holland. Layton Harrell made it a 9-4 game, scoring on a passed ball, before Carson Carriker came in on a single from Hunt.

The Lady Hawks scored four more in the seventh, for the 14-4 score. First as Hunt delivered an RBI single. Carter Followed with an RBI single to left field, before Casey Eddings brought in two on her first career hit, a single to right center.

Christian Brother added a finale run in the bottom of the seventh for the 14-5 final score.

Carter finished the day 4-4 with three RBI and two runs scored; while, Carriker and Hunt finished with three hits apiece. Holland and Valdes added two hits each.

Hannah Draper earned the win to move to 10-8 on the season; allowing two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts through five innings of relief. Payton Lippert made the start, allowing three runs – two earned – on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in two innings.

Shorter will now turn it's attention to postseason, as the Lady Hawks enter the GSC Tournament as the 7th seed, taking on West Florida in the opening round. Game time Thursday, May 4, is set for 1:30pm ET (12:30pm CT) from Huntsville, Ala.
