Huntsville, Ala. -- The season came to an end Saturday evening for the Lady Hawks as they fell to No. 10 West Florida in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Huntsville, Ala.
Shorter (28-23, 17-15 GSC) came out of the gate hot, sending eight batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring three times.
Tiffany Holland led off the game with a triple to left field, and came in to score when
Ericka Bynum reached on a fielder's choice.
Maddie Hunt then made it a 2-0 game, scoring on a single to the left from
Dani Lukas. Before,
Kameron Carter came in on a bases loaded walk to
Taylor Martin for the 3-0 score.
The Lady Hawks added to their lead in the second with a run on two hits, scoring when Carter singled up the middle to bring in Holland.
From there, the Argos (40-12, 23-9 GSC) began chipping away; scoring one each in the third and fourth. West Florida threatened in the fifth, too, but the Lady Hawks shut down the effort when
Kalei Clark tallied two huge strikeouts to help preserve Shorter's 4-2 advantage.
The Lady Hawks held the lead through their half of the seventh, only to have the Argos rally in their last at bat for three runs on four hits to earn the win, 5-4.
Carter and Holland each tallied two hits in the game, while four others had one apiece.
Clark took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Hannah Draper made the start, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and strikeout through four innings of work.
