Lady Hawks earn split with No. 25 West Florida

ROME -- The Lady Hawks split the Saturday doubleheader with No. 25 West Florida; falling in the opener 5-3, before taking the finale 1-0.

The Argos scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a fielder's choice from Meghan Toney.

Only to have Shorter answer in the fourth for three runs to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the home team. The Lady Hawks first run of the day came as Ericka Bynum delivered her team leading 10th homer of the season. Kameron Carter followed with a double and move to third on a single from Dani Lukas, before coming to score on a ground out from Savannah Thomas and a single from Taylor Martin.

West Florida (36-12, 20-9 GSC) then used a four run fifth to take a 5-3 lead; which held, despite chances from Shorter late in the game.

Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing five runs – four earned – on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts through a complete game performance.

Game two proved to be a pitcher's dual as each starter went the distance. Shorter pitcher, Hannah Draper earned the win tallying a complete game shutout, allowing three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. While Sarah Maloney, held the Lady Hawks to five hits, with five strikeouts.

The difference in the game came down to Shorter's (25-22, 14-15 GSC) final at-bat as the Lady Hawks put together a string of three hits to earn the 1-0 win. Bynum led off the inning with her GSC leading 14th double, before being pinch ran for by Ashley Langel. Carter followed with a single, moving Lagel to third, before Lukas delivered the game winning hit – an RBI single to center field.

Of the Lady Hawks' five hits in game two, Lukas finished with two. While, Tiffany Holland, Maddie Hunt, Bynum and Carter all had multi-hit games in game one.

The Lady Hawks will look to earn the series win over West Florida Sunday afternoon; game time is set for 1:00pm ET, weather permitting.
