ROME --Â The Hawks earned the series win over West Georgia, using an eighth inning rally to down the Wolves 8-7 from the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex Sunday afternoon.
The win improves Shorter to 18-15 on the season and 8-13 in the Gulf South Conference; while West Georgia moves to 12-20 overall and 5-16 in conference play.
The Hawks got on the board first, scoring twice in the first inning on RBI singles from Dustin Lawson and Bailey Gerstner. Before adding to it in the second when Patrick Sanderson scored when William Winslow hit into a double play.
The Wolves cut into the lead in the third on an RBI single from Bradley Felkel to make it a 3-1 game.
Shorter answered in the fourth with two, to extend their lead to 5-1, on a two-run double from Isaiah Maddela.
West Georgia countered with two in the fourth to cut the Hawks' lead to 5-3, before taking a 7-5 advantage with a four-run seventh.
Shorter rallied, however, in the eighth for three runs to regain the lead, 8-7. Raul Cortes singled to lead things off, and Sanderson followed with a walk. Steven Maier then hit into a fielder's choice and Winslow lined out. But, with two down and two on, Blaze Vazquez delivered a single; scoring Sanderson. And, was followed by a two-run single from Leech for the 8-7 score.
Jonathan Pintaro earned the win, pitching the final two innings; allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
The Hawks finished the day with twelve hits, with four recording two apiece – Vazquez, Leech, Maddela and Gerstner.
Shorter will return to action Tuesday, April 4, when Emmanuel visits Rome for a 2:00pm start.
