ROME -- The Lady Hawks split the day with West Alabama Friday afternoon, dropping the opener 7-5 before earning a 9-0 win in game two in five innings.
Shorter moves to 23-21 overall and 12-14 in conference play; while the Tigers move to 20-25 on the season and 10-16 in the GSC.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a big lead in game one, scoring four in the bottom of the first.
Maddie Hunt led off the scoring when she came in a double to left field from
Ericka Bynum; who scored later in the inning a single through the left side from
Dani Lukas. Before,
Kameron Carter and Lukas came in on back to back passed balls.
From there, however, West Alabama began chipping away scoring runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth to take a 6-4 lead, before making it a 7-4 game on a solo homerun from Sara Beth King in seventh. Shorter tacked on a final run in the seventh on an RBI double from Bynum for the 7-5 final score.
Hunt finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored; while Bynum added two doubles and two RBI.
Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing six runs – four earned on nine hits with two walk and two strikeouts.
Game two was all Shorter as the Lady Hawks earned the win in five innings, 9-0.
The first run of the game crossed the plate in the first when Hunt scored on a ground out from Bynum. The Lady Hawks then made it a 5-0 game in the second as
Hannah Draper delivered an RBI double to deep left field, before
Tiffany Holland delivered an RBI single through the left side, and Bynum posted a single up the middle to bring in Holland and Tiffany Martin for the 5-0 score.
Shorter broke through for four more in the fourth for the 9-0 score. First as
Abi Valdes connected on her first career homerun to deep center field to plate Holland. And then as Lukas and Carter scored on an error by the center fielder.
Carter, Lukas and Holland each finished with two hits for the game; while Valdes and Bynum each recorded two RBI.
Hannah Draper earned the win to move to 7-8 on the season; holding the Tigers scoreless on three hits through five innings.
The Lady Hawks will look to earn the series win Saturday afternoon, game time is set for 1:00pm from Alto Park.
