Softball falls to West Georgia in doubleheader

ROME -- West Georgia swept the Lady Hawks Saturday afternoon to take the Gulf South Conference series. The Wolves won the opener 11-2 in six innings, before taking the finale 7-4.

Shorter slips to 21-17 on the year and 10-10 in the GSC; while West Georgia moves to 18-17 overall and 8-12 in conference play.

The Lady Hawks scored first in the game one as Dani Lukas delivered a 2-run single to plate Tiffany Holland Maddie Hunt, but that would be the only offense Shorter would get as the Wolves held them scoreless through the remaining inning while adding 11 runs of their own.

Hannah Draper took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with a walk through three innings; while Kalei Clark added three innings of relief, allowing six runs – five earned – on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk.

The Lady Hawks tallied six hits in the game with Holland leading the way with a 3-3 day at the plate.

In game two the softball wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second, before Shorter cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single from Taylor Ann Oda. Kameron Carter delivered a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the third, to plate Hunt, to make it a one run game.

Only to have West Georgia tack on two in the fourth to extend their lead back to three, 5-2. In the bottom of the inning Lukas singled to left field to bring in Oda; who brought in Carter in the fifth on a ground out to again cut the lead to one, 5-4.

The Wolves added two final runs for the 7-4 score.

Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing seven runs – five earned – on twelve hits with two walks and five strikeouts through 6.1 innings of work; while Clark came in for the final two outs.

Ericka Bynum, Lukas, Carter and Oda each finished with two hits apiece.

The Lady Hawks will look to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:00pm at Alto Park.
